With the Olympics underway, the MINI brand automaker has emerged with its “Defy Labels” campaign to show its drivers not to be bound by oppressive labels or negativity. Just as the MINI brand itself overcomes labels, so too do the Olympic athletes competing this year. The campaign spoke with several competing athletes, including two time cancer survivor and pro beach volleyball player Jake Gibb, Muslim fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad and others.
The Olympics bring out the best athletes from every nation, and we are proud to be a part of such an incredible demonstration of diversity, pride and excellence. One successful athlete, Serena Williams, describes her experience in defying labels. Growing up in Compton, California, Williams has had a long, difficult, but ultimately successful Olympic run. In her words, “you’re not playing just for yourself; you’re playing for your country.” We feel that her words embody the meaning behind the “Defy Labels” campaign.
